One of the less known things about Asturias is the variety of hidden places to discover, from dramatic mountains to unspoilt coast, with beautiful forests and clear running rivers in between. Here a few that are not so commonly found:

La Olla de San Vicente, South of Cangas de Onís. Lovely short walk (1.5 hours total) along the River Dobra, which marks the edge of the Picos de Europa park, to a small lake along the river. Cafe-bar on the N-625 at the start of the walk, just past Tornín. Decent food at cafe-bar Bodegón de Dobra in Tornín. Seasonal ingredients.

Mofrechu peak. Short walk (3 hours total) to a panoramic view of the coast near Ribadesella and across to the Picos de Europa. Leave the AS-114 at Corao, pick up the AS-340, route starts just past Igena, vehicle track to the left of the road coming from Corao.

Beech forest, El Hayedo de Biescona. The lowest beech forest closest to the coast, which makes it go into autumn much later (well into November). Beautifully atmospheric forest walk , with mountain views across the Sueve range at the top (4 hours total). Route starts from the AS-260 from Colunga or Arriondas at kilometre 14, near the pink house, near the Mirador del Fito (viewpoint across to the Picos de Europa).

Salmon ladder, Caño, near Cangas de Onís. Just past the village of Caño, during autumn after it has rained.

Ponga forest, South of Cangas de Onís. Many walks and villages amongst beautiful mixed forest, especially in Autumn. La Berea, deer bellowing out a guttural roar in Autumn mating season (better early morning or late evening). Circular driving route possible when raining.

Gulpiyuri beach, Naves junction 306/312 off A-8, national road AS-263. Dramatic sheltered inland beach, set down into the rock. Sea comes through the rock fissures (which makes swimming dangerous). San Antolín beach nearby with beach cafe during high season. Gulpiyuri beach link

Blowholes. Bufones de Pria, near Ribadesella. Natural fissures in the rock make for spectacular cliff top jets of water during rough seas when waves crash into the cliff face below. Pria blowholes

Tazones, west of Villaviciosa. Small fishing village with seafood restaurants serving the days catch.
